Our Sun isn’t a special kind of object — it’s a star, like the ones you see at night, just much closer. It’s so big that everything else circles around it.

Eight planets, two types

There are eight planets. The four nearest the Sun are small and rocky (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars). The four farther out are huge balls of gas and ice (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune).

Gravity keeps the loops going

Gravity is an invisible pull. The Sun’s gravity keeps each planet looping around it instead of flying off into space. That loop is called an orbit.

Instead ask “why” questions: “Why do you think the planets don’t just float away?” The answer (gravity) becomes far stickier when they’ve wondered about it first. Use your own body as a model: you’re the Sun, your child walks in a circle around you — that’s an orbit. Then go bigger: if Earth were the size of a pea, the Sun would be a beach ball a hundred steps away. Scale like that genuinely surprises kids and builds intuition. The deeper skill here is “comparing and grouping” — rocky planets versus gas giants. Sorting things into groups by their properties is real scientific thinking. Finish by having them teach you one thing they didn’t know before. Explaining it back is how an idea moves from “heard it” to “understand it.”
