Volcanoes for kids, explained simply
A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface where melted rock, called magma, can rise up from deep underground. When it reaches the surface it’s called lava. Most volcanoes form where the giant plates that make up the Earth’s crust meet, pull apart, or push together.

Deep under the ground it’s so hot that rock melts into a thick liquid called magma. When it escapes onto the surface, we give it a new name: lava. Same stuff — different place.
The Earth is cracked into plates
The Earth’s hard outer shell is broken into huge slow-moving pieces called tectonic plates. Most volcanoes sit where two plates meet — that’s where magma finds a way up.
